LM Megan had 3 markers.  Robert gave her 2 more markers. How many markers did Megan have altogether.

 

MB Ms. Baker had 6 bags of candy, there are 8 pieces in each bag.  How many pieces of candy does she have?

DI  Lindsey has 14 pieces of bubble gum.  She gave 6 pieces to Shawn, How many does she have now.

LO I need 23 tennis balls.  If 3 balls come in a can, How many cans do I need to buy?

Found this type of problem was difficult for K, 1st, and some 2nd grade students.  3 & 4 did complete the problem correctly.

discussed how to group numbers and how to share out to group numbers to complete mental math
counting, direct model, mental math, Denise shared breaking apart of numbers
3rd will be doing problems that involve fractions, 5th will do division with large numbers, Linda breaking apart numbers, encouraging counting on and grouping with 5s' and 10s.

some drew the change on their papers using coins, some direct modeled with tallies or other marks, some worked the problem out, some counted on and some counted back.
