I was wondering if anyone had ideas about how to challenge the gifted math students during CGI time? Robyn V. Turkey Valley

I am wondering about how much time a week that teachers are spending on CGI?

I came up with an idea on how to challenge the gifted math students during CGI time (with the help of Cheryl Carolan); I place a challenge question at the bottom of the standard question I do with the class. This challenge problem is larger numbers and/or fractions. This ends up working out for many students as a time filler while others finish up the initial question. Robyn V. Turkey Valley

Wings Park Elementary has collected 172 food items for the Grinch contest.  20 items will fit into a box.  How many boxes will it take to haul these items to the food pantry?  11/30/09 4th grade team Oelwein

I am the 4th grade Special Education teacher at Oelwein and I changed this problem a little to fit the different levels of my students.  I just gave them number options to choose from and it worked great! The students were able to choose their own number options or do all of the choices.

'Wings Park Elementary has collected _______ food items for the Grinch contest. _______ items will fit into a box.  How many full boxes will it take to haul these items to the food pantry? 'How many cans will be left over?  (27,10) (179,20)  (567,20) 12/16/2009

I also chose another problem; Grandma has made_____ holiday cookies.  She wants to give a bag of 10 cookies to each one of her friends.  How many bags of 10 cookies can she make?

(33)   (179)  (456)  (736)  (953/20)

Some of my students did all of the number choices and some only finished the easiest one.  The students who completed all of the number choices began to see a pattern.  If they solved more than one of these problems I had them try to use a different strategy.  If they used base 10 blocks on the first problem then they needed to use another way to figure out the problem.  My students used many different strategies such as base 10 blocks, equations, unifex cubes, pictures, tallys and they were able to see a pattern.

Tammy - Oelwein - 4th The students liked the problem because it was a real-life problem. We were really collecting cans at the time for a Grinch contest in town. Some students used the base ten blocks, but most used their knowledge of base-ten to do the problem using patterning.

12/17/09  Jenny Schutte (Postville - 4th)

My problem is the following:

Matt has _____ cookies.  He put _____ cookies in each package.  How many packages can he fill?

(14,10)      (36,10)     (91,10)      (151, 10(547,10)

I had some who drew the picture.  I had some count by 10's until they got to the closest 10.  I had some who just knew that the answer was the number in the tens place.  The good news is that all attempted to do the problem and many were very successful with at least the first 2 number choices.

That's a great problem.

A lot of my students drew out pictures to answer this question. They literally put 20 in each box.

12/3/09 I do CGI in my classroom twice a week. The students seem to look forward to those days each week.
